Diego Garcia is a small tropical island in the Indian Ocean of Earth, about 1,000 miles south of the southern India coast and far east of the "African Horn". It has been a military base since the 1970's. In 1971 RAF (British Royal Air Force) Gan was built there. As of sometime during the 1960's, it became a British Indian Ocean Territory and still was during the 21st Century.
Battle of Earth
The UNSC base on the island launched the first counterattacks against the Covenant when they invaded New Mombasa in Kenya, Africa in 2552 during The First Battle of Earth. Among the units to respond was the 77th Marine Regiment and the 405th UNSC Marine Corps Unit. During the Second Battle of Earth, a computer screen showed a Covenant capital ship within what is probably firing range of the island. Its fate after the battle is unknown.
