First Lieutenant Canfield was a Company Grade Officer in the UNSC Marine Corps [1]. He was the Commanding Officer of the Shock Trooper contingent onboard the UNSC Midsummer Night.

He and his platoon, along with Lieutenant Jacob Keyes boarded the cargo hauler Finnegan's Wake during a routine patrol. After the platoon had boarded the ship, they were caught in an explosion that was part of an ambush by Insurrectionist gunmen. During the explosion, Lieutenant Canfield was instantly killed,[2] and Faison then assumed command of the platoon. With the help of Lt. Keyes, the Marines managed to get off of the Finnegan's Wake and get safely back on board the Midsummer Night with a daring space jump.
