This is a list of Xbox Live multiplayer ranks in Halo 3.
Players are given a military rank based upon their Skill and EXP level.
The first chart shows how a player's rank is determined for their Global Rank, which is the Rank that will show up in Custom Games and on the service record, this is the Rank that is made up of all of the EXP gained in all of the playlists (plus more if the player has had the Gamertag before the TU2 update).[1][2]

Gain and Loss of EXP
Tips for Ranking Up
- For starters, the Lone Wolves playlist is the most trouble-free and unproblematic way to get up to skill level 10, required for becoming a Lieutenant. This is because as long as your scoring position is in the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd you will gain a considerable amount of EXP and if you win a couple games in a row there, you will earn Skill points.
- Team Doubles playlist is also another good choice for ranking up. Just make sure you have a buddy to join you in your team to have faith in them. Otherwise you can be paired up with people who betray teammates for no good reason; or worse, leave.
- Team Slayer playlist is also a good playlist to rank up on after you get your highest skill to 10. Try to use your headset to talk to your team to make it easier. Do not betray people or you will get booted. Make sure you play ranked team slayer not social, it will not get your skill up. Social slayer does give you EXP though, just not as much as Team slayer. Also Team Slayer may require you to download a free map pack in order to play
- Try being alert for Double EXP Weekend playlists. You will usually earn 2 EXPs instead of just one. Grifball and Living Dead are recommended for starters, as whichever player ranks you encounter, fun is always guaranteed in the game.
- For those new to Halo, avoid Big Team Battle and playlists that have long range weaponry like Battle Rifles for starting weapons. Gamers with higher experience will dominate new players.
- If you are a skilled at headshot weaponry like Battle Rifles and Covenant Carbines, ranking up will be easy because many starters do not really know how to use these weapons well, also, Team SWAT can be a good starter for a player like this looking for Lieutenant.
- Unless you are playing with friends that you have trained with, or you can take on 4 enemies and win, MLG is not suggested for raising your skill.
Losing EXP
This occurs when you quit a game before it's completed. In other words, it's almost the equivalent to betraying your teammates. If your Xbox Live connection disconnects, it will be counted as quitting and you will lose EXP as well. However, playlist EXP will not be lost as a result of quitting. In all cases, quitting Matchmaking games is strongly discouraged and may cause everyone calling you a noob/pussy.
Note: Quitting from a Double EXP Weekend game will still only result in losing 1 EXP.
Trivia
- Beyond the rank of lieutenant, rank does not benefit players because there are no more armor permutations or achievements left to earn.
- In the new auto update (TU2), a player will have individual ratings for each playlist and will start with 0 EXP. This means you will have to work your way up from a Recruit. Your "Global" rank will still be displayed in your Service Record, custom games, and in the campaign lobby.
- In the new update (TU2), if a player achieves the rank of a Lieutenant in an individual playlist, they will get one of the seven Vidmaster Achievements towards unlocking the Recon Armor.
