Talk:Sentience

From Halopedia, the Halo wiki

Untitled[edit]

I made this article so people who have played the game series who do not understand what sentient means so they can look here and understand it.

Cough...Dictionary.com anyone? Cheers. RickrollerGeneralÌṂρεσάḹόґMyVictoriesFile:Cavalier_achievement.gif|28px]] 00:06, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

The realworld part: I dont think the realworld part is needed because there is wide discussion within games that revolve around sentient beings and their relation to the flood and the halo array, so with respect im going to remove it. - Skene4kaos, my actual gamertag is Scene4kaos

Wrong def. of sentient...[edit]

Sentient means having consciousness, being able to perceive. The term this article is referring to is sapience. Jabberwock xeno 23:22, May 8, 2010 (UTC)

Proposal: Move to "Sapience"[edit]

Jabberwock xeno's comment is almost celebrating its second birthday, but it raises a legitinmate point - we're perpetuating the wrong definition of "sentient". I propose that we rename the article "sapience", and clarify the distinction between sentience and sapience.

Support[edit]

  • Support.svg Support -- The Halo Array was designed to starve the Flood by targeting its hosts. The Flood can hijack anything with a nervous system, so the Halo Array neutralized neurons. That means that when concerning the Halo Array, the proper term to use is indeed "sentience" as the Halo Array kills all sentient organisms. When concerning different species' capacity for self-awareness, self-reflection, wisdom, etcetera, the proper term is "sapience". The two terms are very different, and the distinction between them is important to the Halo lore. Eipok Kruden 05:11, 21 June, 2015 (PDT)

Oppose[edit]

  • Oppose.svg Oppose -- I think the sole reason for this article to exist is the fact sentience is canonically significant, in relation to the Halo Array, smart AIs and the hypothetical concept of "transsentience". Meanwhile, an article on sapience wouldn't have much relevant in-universe content besides defining the word. --Jugus (Talk | Contribs) 15:22, 22 January 2012 (EST)
  • Oppose.svg Oppose -- The word "sapient" isn't used in the series; only "sentient". We should just re-write the article; replace the definition of sapient (the ability to act with judgement) with that of sentient (to feel and perceive).-- Forerunner 18:22, 21 January 2012 (EST)

Comments[edit]

That different is pretty big, in fact. While a full conciousness can only be confirmed amongst humans - a being acting on their own will rather than just by instinct, there are many sentient animals. That makes the Halo Array much more deadly, particularly to mammals.-- Forerunner 18:27, 21 January 2012 (EST)
