Real-time strategy and Halo[edit]
Official projects[edit]
Halo originally began life in 1997 as an RTS title codenamed Armor being developed for Mac. As development progressed, the game evolved from RTS into a third-person shooter, before eventually settling on a first-person shooter, released as Halo: Combat Evolved in 2001.
To-date two official Halo games have been produced in the RTS genre, Halo Wars and Halo Wars 2. The former was produced by Ensemble Studios and released in 2009, having originally been concepted as an original IP codenamed Phoenix. The sequel was produced by Creative Assembly and released in 2017.
Notable fanworks[edit]
Alongside official Halo titles, several notable RTS fanworks have been created inspired by Halo. These include the cancelled mod Halogen for Command & Conquer: Generals and Sins of the Prophets, for Sins of a Solar Empire. The latter focuses on bringing naval battles to life inspired by the Halo novels and has since worked with Halo Studios to have their artwork and designs officially canonised.
