Ranks in Halo 3

This is a list of Xbox Live multiplayer ranks in Halo 3.

Overview

Players are given a military rank based upon their Skill and EXP level.

The player has both a Global (main) Rank, which is the Rank that will show up in custom games and on the service record and a separate rank for each individual playlist.

The Global rank is made up of all of the EXP gained in all of the playlists (plus more if the player has had the Gamertag before the TU2 update).[1][2]

The Playlist rank is made up of the EXP you have gained in that playlist.

Do note that Global Ranks can be skipped, but not Playlist Ranks; such as in the global ranking you can skip Gunnery Sergeant Grade 3 to go straight to Lieutenant Grade 1 from Gunnery Sergeant Grade 2, if your highest skill and EXP meet the criteria to do so.

Trivia

  • Beyond the rank of Lieutenant, rank does not benefit players because there are no more armor permutations or achievements left to earn.
  • After the auto update (TU2), players have individual ratings for each playlist and start with 0 EXP. This means you have to work your way up from a Recruit. Your Global rank is still displayed in your Service Record, custom games, and in the campaign lobby.
  • After the auto update (TU2), if a player achieves the rank of a Lieutenant in an individual playlist, they will get one of the seven Vidmaster Achievements towards unlocking the Recon Armor.
  • Technically, Brigadier should require 50 rank to get, as it is a 1 star General. This is also reflected as the first General rank being 2 stars.
  • This system appears to be based off of the United States Army and Marine ranking systems. The major notable difference is the lack of Warrant Officer.
  • 5 Star General is the highest rank officially achieved in the U.S. Military (Commander in Chiefis above, but being the President, not technically in the Military), being the equivalent of Field Marshals in foreign countries. A 6 star General is the highest. John Pershing was speculated to have the rank in World War II, and Douglas MacArthur was considered to be promoted. Following Japan's surrender, the need for the rank was dropped, so it was never used.
