They operate by means of emitting microwave radiation; the word "maser" was originally derived from the acronym Microwave Amplification by Simulated Emission of Radiation. Masers are effective for short-range, interplanetary communications, but as they are limited to the speed of light, they are too slow to be effectively used over interstellar distances.[1]
