Dr. John Smith was an ONI scientist working aboard the UNSC prison vessel, UNSC Mona Lisa in 2552. While aboard he studied several Flood-infected Elites in hopes of finding a cure to their disease, he also conducted research in hope of turning the Flood into warriors for the UNSC. Whether ONI approved of this, is unknown. When the ship was overridden by the Flood, he remained hidden inside a small room until he was discovered by Lopez's squad. He later escaped aboard their Pelican.[1]
