Joe (last name unknown) is an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper assigned to Earth. After his wife Maggie was killed during the Battle of Reach, he followed her wish that he keep living and attempted to find a girlfriend. When he got three days shore leave, he took a train to Manhattan and hit on his fellow traveler Rani Sobeck. Rani, however, was committed to her boyfriend Nick despite his advice to take what she could get before the Covenant inevitably attacked.[1]
