A gravity well on Requiem

A gravity well, as it was called by the UNSC, is a type of Forerunner gravity-manipulation device used to selectively attract and trap objects, often forcefully. One example of this technology was the immense gravity well located within the artificial Forerunner shield world of Requiem, which consisted of a sphere of energy surrounded by three prongs extending upwards from a large circular structure. During the Battle of Requiem in 2557, the Master Chief and a contingent of SPARTAN-IVs and Marines were tasked with destroying the gravity well, which was protected by several particle cannons, in order to allow the anchored UNSC Infinity to escape the planet. Using a target designator, the Master Chief was able to guide a missile to the gravity well, destroying it and releasing the Infinity.[1]
