Overview

UNSC Army Rangers serve as long-range scouts, deploying sniper teams to observe the enemy and place sensors behind enemy lines to provide intelligence to UNSC forces. Rangers also specialise in counterinsurgency operations and organizing resistance groups on occupied worlds, though during the Human-Covenant War this task was made difficult by the Covenant's reluctance to take and hold ground when it could simply glass targets from orbit. After the war's conclusion, the Rangers have transitioned back to their more traditional scout role, working with Spartan teams against local criminal elements, pirate or mercenary raiders, and other threats.
