==History==
Published by the [[Wikipedia:Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty|Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty]] beginning in 1908, the ''Admiralty Manual of Seamanship'' was a nautical manual and handbook covering in depth many aspects of the sailing and handling of ships. Equally useful for merchant shipping, it was primarily intended for the officers and men of the Royal Navy. From 1908 to the Admiralty's dissolution in 1964, the manual was published in three volumes; the particulars of each volume differ depending on the edition, but broadly corresponded to introductory, intermediate, and advanced aspects of seamanship. Volume II, a copy of which was owned by Serin Osman, was typically used by junior officers.

After the dissolution of the Admiralty, a new version of the Manual was published by the [[Wikipedia:Ministry of Defence|Ministry of Defence]], revised and condensed to focus more specifically on the operations of the Royal Navy. This new version, in one volume, would go through twelve editions by 2015.<ref>[http://iims.org.uk/the-admiralty-manual-of-seamanship-12th-edition-published/ '''International Institute of Maritime Surveying''' ''The Admiralty Manual of Seamanship 12th edition published'']</ref>
