personally i think its a momentum based concept. imagine if you will that this debris was intentionally "fired" when high charity was either in or just exiting slipspace which if i am not mistaken is basically faster than light travel. this means that a projectile going faster then the speed of light hits the ship. i think that that much momentum could very well blast through a shield with minimal difficulty. I also like to entertain the theory that power was being diverted from the shield to the ships "glassing" cannon due to damage sustained during orbital combat, and hence the shields were either weakened or completely shut down.
