| During the [[Battle of Earth]], his squad was dispatched from the {{UNSCShip|In Amber Clad}} to relieve the ground forces. Their [[D77-TC Pelican|Pelican]] was shot down over [[Old Mombasa]] by a [[Type-47 Ultra Heavy Assault Platform|Scarab]] walker. He survived the crash, but his squad was soon attacked by a [[Covenant Empire|Covenant]] patrol. He was nearly killed by a [[Kig-yar Sniper|Jackal Sniper]] but the sniper just missed him. An [[Sangheili|Elite]] then tried to sneak up on him with an [[Type-1 Energy Weapon/Sword|Energy sword]]. Butkis' rifle was destroyed and he himself narrowly dodged the attack and fell to the ground, picking up a [[type-25 Directed Energy Pistol|plasma pistol]] and charging it. As the Elite took [[Jones (Another Day at the Beach)|Jones]] hostage, Butkis was able to shoot the Elite and save his squadmate. His squad then met up with the [[John-117|Master Chief]] and helped him to chase down and destroy the Scarab.
