FENRIS Nuclear Warheads are retired low-yield bombs that the UNSC once used, they were replaced by the more powerful warheads mentioned elsewhere. However, recent actions had depleted  the UNSC nuclear stockpile and these retired warheads, slated for conversion into peaceful purposes, were the only bombs they had left.

The FENRIS nuclear warhead is a type of UNSC nuclear weapon and part of the Medium Fusion Destructive Device class.

Description
The casings of the warheads were superhardened. The reasons for this was to contain the radiation and to hold the energy for a bit longer to boost the thermonuclear yield.
FENRIS warheads had superhardened cases to contain the detonation longer and boost the thermonuclear yield. The hardened cases also made them resilient to small arms and explosions, so resilient in fact that they were regarded as useless without the detonation codes. FENRIS warheads are considered low-yield devices.

They may be detonated by remote or by pressing the warhead's detonator manually.
These warheads are first mentioned in Halo: Ghosts of Onyx when Blue Team had to infiltrate the rebel base, Camp New Hope on the planet Victoria, to recover three bombs..  This mission took place in the year 2531. They will not be seen used again until 2552 when Blue Team has to stop a group of Brutes from stealing 12 FENRIS warheads using the UNSC Centennial Orbital Elevator. It is assumed that the warheads were still used in the time between the above dates.

During the Battle for Earth, SPARTAN-II Blue Team recaptured 12 FENRIS warheads from the Covenant at the Centennial Orbital Elevator. At the top of the elevator, six armed warheads were smuggled aboard a Covenant destroyer while another destroyer, Bloodied Spirit was commandeered by Blue Team. The enemy destroyer was destroyed by a combination of internal nuclear detonations and plasma torpedo fire.
