First of all I have seen an Abrams, second of all it says it plain and simple and I quote "The Pelican is huge, but it seems that very few people fully grasp its hugeness. This is at least partially due to the in-game view and the relatively small number of people that were ever shown riding in it. But truth be told, you can fit an Abrams M1A1 MBT in the troop bay."

This would explain the following:

Halo: First Strike Chapter 1 Page 7

Under other circumstances, such modifications would have left the Pelican's troop bay unusually cavernous. Every square centimeter of space, however, was occupied. Twenty-seven Spartans braced themselves and clung to the frame of the ship; they crouched in their MJOLNIR armor to absorb the shock of their rapid descent.

And

Halo: Ghosts of Onyx Chapter 6 Page

Mendez turned to the Pelicans, inhaled, and yelled, "Recruits, fallout!" Kids streamed off dropship ramps. Hundreds tromped onto the field, screaming, and throwing clumps of sod at one another. After being cooped up for hours, they went wild. A few, however, milled near the ships, dark circles under their eyes, and they huddled tighter. Adult handlers herded them onto the grass.

Also take a look at this image from the Halo Wars E3 2008 trailer when the pelican deploys its troops:

it looks a lot wider then what we see in any of the three Halo games. I do not believe this is something that would be exaggerated. What is said on Page 38 also had to be checked by Robert McLees who is the current holder of the HALO STORY BIBLE, the definitive source of every aspect of the Halo mythology, And he was involved with the book as he is listed in the credits.
