John-117 (born 2511) is a human Master Chief Petty Officer in the UNSC Navy and an augmented member of the SPARTAN-II Program. John has commanded the operational Spartan units during the Insurrection since 2525 and throughout the majority of the Human-Covenant War and the Great Schism. He is one of the most veteran special warfare operators in the military, with almost 40 years of active duty and over 200 ground engagements against the Covenant Empire to his credit[2]; The Master Chief has earned every major service medal from all four branches of the Defense Forces. [2][note 1] In Fall 2552, he was made Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, becoming the senior enlisted adviser to Lord Hood, Commander-in-Chief, Fleet and Chief of Naval Operations.
Among most humans, John-117 is simply referred to by his rank of "Master Chief" or more intimately by his identification of "SPARTAN-117." Covenant forces, who have been dealt very little mercy by John-117, refer to him as "the Demon"; Sangheili soldiers who later fought beside John-117 would continue this practice, yet in a respectful manner. Forerunner ancillas, such as 04-343 Guilty Spark, only refer to him as the "Reclaimer;" however, this title is a birthright to all humans.

- ^ As John is subordinate to Naval Special Weapons, it is unlikely that he could have earned exclusive service medals from the Army or Air Force. These medals may have been bestowed on behalf of the Office of Naval Intelligence in order to boost morale. As well, John-117 is noted as not being the recipient of the Prisoner of War Medallion despite being captured in 2531 by rebel forces.
