"Portal"

I'm not exactly sure whether "portal" is the best word to describe these things. A portal is a doorway, or an entrance in general, or in a newer sense, a teleporter. However, the devices this article describes serve as means of access over gaps; a more sophisticated form of bridges. While they aren't bridges in the strictest sense, they're a lot closer to bridges than portals.

I know there was a vote over this, but calling it a "portal" still doesn't feel as right as "bridge". Also, I'm not sure whether the person who originally started the vote confused these with something else (gravity lifts come to mind), since they were talking about vertical movement and moving to higher/lower floors. The device make the player float a little above the floor, but the movement is always horizontal; they never transport the player to different floors. Both ends of the gravity "bridge" are always on the same level.

When looking at the revision of this page from the time of the vote, it indeed looks very confusing and it could be easy to mix it up with the gravity lift chutes in High Charity. Again, just to be clear, this article is supposed to be about those bridge-like things made of energy that carry the player to the other side. Not anything that moves them to other floors. Gondola is good idea, but a gondola is something that holds passengers that moves to and from a location while this is just an anti-gravity field that propels you forward. --SPARTAN-125 Cally99117

It's hard to accurately name it since there is no clear human analogue, but the movement is horizontal unlike in a ski lift, and "Gondola" seems to imply that there is a physical object that serves as the means of transport. It's a bit like a conveyor belt made of energy, only used as a bridge. "Gravity conveyor" comes to mind, but that may be too vague. I'm still learning toward "Gravity bridge"; the "gravity" part should be enough to differentiate it from regular bridges. --Jugus (Talk | Contribs) 14:13, August 31, 2010 (UTC)
