Forge World is a new map in Halo: Reach, and the largest map in the series' history. Set on Installation 04, Forge World allows the most flexible Forge editing ever seen, allowing players to create entire maps, within the larger map itself. The map is split into five main sections; Blood Gulch, the "island", the "rock", the "interior" and the "pocket".[1]

Description

The "gulch" is a direct remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved level.[2] It was first revealed to the public through a Red vs. Blue public service announcement, requested by Bungie in celebration of Bungie Day 2010. The true nature of this map was revealed in the Forge World Vidoc on 7/22/2010. It actually started as five separate maps. It uses a new system called impostering that allows far away objects to be drawn cheaply. It is a giant map consisting of Five distinct areas: the Remade Blood Gulch area, an island, an enclosed space, a small cliff area, The Rock (a corkscrew shaped island).

The Gulch is set in a semi-enclosed, symmetrical canyon with a base at either end and an open field between, and a drying river running through it. The level supports vehicles and is recommended for 4-16 players. However, unlike its namesake, this map features a temperate climate full of grass, akin to the style of its predecessor, Template:Levelname.

Unlike the original Blood Gulch, the canyon is only semi-enclosed.[3] There are also some features similar to Valhalla, the most predominant being the grassy terrain, the lake on the far side of the map beyond the blue base, and the snowy mountains beyond the red base. Other than the environmental changes, the map is very faithful to the original Blood Gulch, with even the simplest nooks in the canyon walls being remade. The map itself will be larger, and will have teleporters reminiscent of the teleporters from the maps Cold Storage and Gemini. The bases themselves will be more detailed, with colored lights designating the red and blue base.

The Island area is roughly symmetrical with a large rock formation in the center and a small bay one side.

The Enclosed area is reminiscent of The Crypt from Sandbox but instead of stone it appears to be made of Forerunner Metals.

The Cliff area is about the same size as the The Crypt but is positioned on the edge of the lake.

The Rock is a tall island with a spiraling path from top to bottom. This area was based off ascension.

Trivia

  • It is currently the only known level in Halo: Reach to take place on a Halo installation.
  • Because it has been confirmed that the events of Halo: Reach take place solely on the planet Reach, it can be assumed that this map will not be integrated into the Campaign like most, if not all, of the others.
  • This is the first time that Bungie has brought back a map more than once, as Blood Gulch was also remade into Coagulation in Halo 2. Every other "remake" has been done only once.
