The Jetpack in use.

The Jetpack is a user-operated jet engine mounted on the back, solely used by the United Nations Space Command. Variants have been designed for both deep-space and aerial missions.

T-PACK

Designed for long-range deep-space operations, the T-PACK (Model: 050978[1]) was still some of the riskiest equipment available. They featured triple redundancy NAV systems and stabilizers. T-PACKS contain two tanks of compressed Triamino Hydrazine, which, if ruptured, would cause rapid loss of control, for which there is little a person can do. They can also be linked up to weapons such as MA5B Assault Rifles. Should the wearer fire the weapon, the pack will provide enough counter thrust to keep the wearer from spinning out of control.[2] T-PACKS also contain emergency rescue lines of orange and white rope meant to rescue other people who are stranded in deep space.[1] They are essentially a less advanced and effective version of the Covenant Antigravity Packs.

In Halo: Reach

The unidentified jetpack provides one of the seven Armor Abilities that are available in Halo: Reach.[3][4]

Advantages

The Jetpack can be used for travel purposes, as they may bypass any need to walk up many different staircases, ramps, etc by flying up to the destination. Flying up high is also effective in combat; when an enemy has a short-ranged weapon, but the wielder of the Jetpack has a normal weapon, they can fly up high and be out of range of the enemy's weapon. Also, the Jetpack is a great tool for defending a flag carrier, because the flyer can swoop down on anyone trying to kill the flag carrier.

Disadvantages

If the player using the Jetpack flies too high without noting the fuel depleting, the player will fall from the height and be harmed, possibly dying upon impact. This can be countered by crouching just before impact, but requires precise timing.

The jetpack is still affected by the range of many weapons. The MA37 or other short-medium ranged weapons will still have the limited range and power, thus greatly reducing the attack power of the jetpack user.

Players using the jetpack are prone to being attacked by ground forces if they are unaware of their surroundings. Once shields are down and still in mid-air, there is almost always the chance that you will die. To prevent this, always be aware of your surroundings and motion tracker before you take off for long flights.

Players using the jetpack cannot move fast enough to avoid the Needler's lock on.

Trivia

  • T-PACKS also appear to be adversely affected by radiation; if they come into proximity with unshielded radiation, they will fail. They will also fail with similar results if struck by weaponry.
  • They have also caused the disappearance of two SPARTAN-II supersoldiers. One (Unit Serial: #82.10923.192) was worn by Kurt-051 in 2531 on a mission in the Groombridge 34 System. It failed when it came into contact with radiation, causing him to spin out of control[1] Another, worn by James during the Battle of Reach, exploded when hit with projectiles from a Needler, causing him to spin out of control and subsequently lost contact.[5].
  • Weapons stored on your back when the Jetpack is equipped appear to be stored 'through' the thruster casing.
