The M6D is a recoil-operated, magazine-fed handgun, chambered in 12.7x40mm ammunition, typically employed with semi-armor-piercing, high-explosive (SAPHE) rounds of that chambering, and feeding from 12-round detachable box magazines. It has also been known to be chambered in the .450 Magnum load. The weapon is somewhat unusual for a handgun in that it is capable of both semi-automatic and automatic firing. The M6D is one of the M6 series' upscaled variants, being larger than non-upscaled M6s by roughly 117%. The M6D is also an officer's model, and in this capacity was employed by Captain Jacob Keyes on the Pillar of Autumn. Like other officer's model M6s, the weapon is fitted with smart-linked KFA-2 optic for utilization by those employing a heads-up display.

Introduction
M6Ds are produced with a distinctive hard chrome finish. The M6D is relatively distinctive among the M6 family, most notable for the brown hue of the grip, which features small bumps across its surface. The length of the magazine, which integrates a prominent grip extension, makes the weapon appear comparatively very large. Various kanji characters can be observed in different locations on its body.

The M6D Pistol is a common UNSC sidearm and was probably first put into service around 2524 (based on Fall of Reach). It is a model of the M6 series pistols that were distributed to members of the UNSC Navy and the Spartan-II Program. This particular M6 variation is featured in Halo: Combat Evolved and cameos in a Halo 2 multiplayer map and is considered to be an extremely powerful weapon when compared to other M6 series weapons. It is mostly seen in the hands of crewmen and its flesh damage as well as accuracy and range are much higher than other M6 models. Its rate of fire is also rather high.
Functionality
As with most human weapons, the M6D is discharged when a trigger positioned at the top of the grip is depressed by the index finger. The energy of the expanding propellant gasses from the cartridge causes the slide to reciprocate into the open position, expelling the spent casing of the round just fired. The weapon's recoil mechanism then moves the slide back into place, stripping a fresh round from the magazine and chambering it to make the weapon ready to fire once again. This process occurs with almost imperceptible speed and can be repeated with successive trigger-pulls until the weapon is emptied, at which point the slide will lock back, awaiting the insertion of another magazine. When a fresh magazine is inserted, the slide will then travel forward, stripping the first round from the magazine and chambering it. If the weapon is reloaded before it is completely empty, this process will not occur as the cycle of the slide is uninterrupted. When the weapon is employed in its fully-automatic fire-mode, the trigger does not need to be repeatedly pulled for continuous firing. To prevent accidental firing, the weapon has a safety mechanism which is manually engaged when the firearm is not in active use.

Summary
To utilize the weapon's KFA-2 optic, the user must be equipped with headwear or eyewear capable of displaying a HUD. When activated, the weapon projects the view from the scope at x2 magnification on the user's visor with a circular targeting reticle.

The M6D is a semi-automatic, recoil-operated, magazine-fed, large-bore handgun that is controllable enough to fire rapidly, although at the cost of accuracy. It is most likely striker-fired, due to the fact that there is no external hammer. It fires the M225 SAP-HE (Semi-Armor Piercing, High Explosive) rounds from a 12 round magazine. It has a decent high rate of fire (3.5 rounds/sec or 210 rounds/min) with a very long effective range, being able to hit a target accurately up to about 90-95 meters. Its maximum range, however, is 122.5 meters (maximum range being how far the bullet can actually travel). The weapon’s accuracy is quite precise and has a very small shot spread at close and medium ranges. This, combined with its decent damage against current shield systems, makes it an acceptable weapon of choice when faced with shielded opponents. It is, however, even more effective against flesh and hard/soft armor, being able to kill most targets in 1 shot to the head or a couple of shots to the body (depending on the target).
Performance
The performance of the M6D has been repeatedly indicated to rely heavily on proficiency of its user. John-117 believed that, in the hands of someone who knew how to operate it, the M6D possessed a great deal of stopping power and was one of the UNSC's most effective infantry weapons, being almost as effective as an assault rifle when firing SAPHE ammunition. Likewise, a proficient shooter can also use the M6D to engage targets from a surprising distance when making use of the mounted KFA-2 optic. Its aptitude in this application is so great that, circumstantially, it is preferable to pick off lightly-protected semi-distant enemy targets with this weapon than an assault rifle.

Technical Specifications
As with many non-specialized human firearms, this weapon can be somewhat inefficient against targets equipped with personal energy shielding, requiring in one instance the expenditure of a full magazine to incapacitate an elite minor. However, headshots with the weapon can be very effective, making careful shot placement of high importance when engaging Covenant forces. They are, of course, not very effective at engaging Covenant vehicles, with rounds fired from the weapon simply ricocheting off the exterior of targets such as the Umbra light transport.

The M6D Pistol is a DA only (possibly) UNSC handgun that fires 12.7x40mm semi-armor piercing high explosive rounds from a 12-round magazine. This weapon has a polymer handle, making it comfortable in the user's hands, along with a titanium alloy body, and utilizes the M225 12.7mmx40mm SAP-HE round (.50 caliber). It fires these powerful rounds from a 12 round, single stack magazine that does not fit flush into the magazine housing (A flush magazine fits completely inside the housing and does not protrude out of it).
History
The M6D saw a significant amount of service throughout the Human-Covenant War. It was used by SPARTAN-II operatives throughout Operation: SILENT STORM and the subsequent mission to Netherop in 2526. Spartans continued to use the weapon, this time chambered in .450 Magnum ammo, during the Battle of Sigma Octanus IV. Most notable, however, is its usage during the Battle of Installation 04. Throughout the engagement, it was employed heavily by UNSC marines and Navy personnel. Captain Jacob Keyes notably offered his M6D to John-117 to use to evacuate Cortana from the Pillar of Autumn, which he then went on to utilize on the surface of the ring.

The M6D is semi-automatic and fires using the short recoil principle. This means that the trigger needs to be pulled after every shot for the next round to be fired. Because it is semi-automatic, the gun will cock itself after every shot due to recoil and will continue to do so until the magazine is empty. The recoil comes from the gases of the rounds fired. The gases force the slide, located on the top of the gun, backward. The slide not only absorbs the force of the gas but it also uses the force to eject spent casings out of the ejection port and load new rounds into the chamber. It also re-cocks the gun. Of course, before the first round can be fired, a round must be chambered. This is done by inserting a loaded magazine into the grip of the weapon (where most pistol mags are inserted today) and then by pulling the slide back completely and letting it slingshot forward, which will strip a round from the top of the magazine and carry it into the chamber. There is a small, red rectangular box on the flat back of the slide that protrudes out slightly when the weapon is cocked. Once this is done, the safety (which is not visible on the in-game model) must be switched up or off or the weapon will not fire. Once all the rounds have been spent, the slide catch, a rectangular lever located above the trigger on the receiver, is forced upward and locks the slide by catching a little notch. To reload, the empty magazine must be removed by using the magazine release button located on the grip. Once the empty magazine is removed, a fresh one can be inserted. Once the fresh magazine is inserted, the slide catch is pressed downward, releasing it forward to strip a round. If there is still a round in the chamber when reloading, than a simple ejection of one magazine and an insertion of another, omitting the slide catch portion of a normal reload, is all that needs to be done.
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Depiction
The M6D is a very basic pistol when it comes to technology. It is a large handgun, having an overall length of 26.7cm and possesses a barrel for traditional rifles, improving accuracy by spinning the bullet. It has a chrome silver color and operates like most modern day pistols. It also has rear sights (does not possess front sights due to the scope). The control lever serves as a safety (and most likely a decocking lever). If it is also a decocking lever this would most likely be done by pushing down on the lever past the safety point. This weapon features a KFA-2 2x optical, smart-linked scope. This scope links directly to a Spartan’s HUD or a Marine eye piece. It also has a large grip guard, which helps prevent the user from dropping it and a chrome barrel which helps prevent corrosion. It does not possess company writing like modern day pistols do.
In Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, the M6D is represented by a repurposed Halo 3 magnum model, with markings on the weapon changed to reflect that it is an M6D. It features a black, smooth grip, a shorter magazine, and is polished to a higher sheen than the more prominent depiction from Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 5: Guardians. In all respects save for the "M6D" marking on the slide, it resembles the M6G2.

Trivia
The M6D uses 12.7x40mm M225 SAPHE (Semi Armor Piercing High Explosive) .50 Caliber Ammunition Magnum loads. . These rounds have and make up a metal coating of copper or cupro-nickel around the perimeter of the projectile while the projectile itself is hardened and hollowed out and filled with additional primer. The projectile will deform and explode shortly after penetration. When the round hits a hard object such as body armor, the metal coating will deform, allowing the hardened projectile to continue into the target because most of the energy is kept with the hardened projectile. The reason for making these rounds semi-armor piercing instead of flat out armor piercing is to prevent the projectile from leaving the target and wounding someone that may be behind it. These rounds are highly explosive, meaning that the round is designed to explode after it has come in contact and penetrated a target. It is good for use against Grunts and Jackals but takes much more to bring down an Elite.
*One of the comments on the weapon changes in Halo 2 revolved around the fact that in Halo 1, "the assault rifle handled like an SMG and the pistol handled like a rifle." In Halo 2, the altered weapon loadout featured "a rifle that handles like a rifle, a pistol that handles like a pistol, and an SMG that handles like an SMG."

*The M6D has Japanese kanji (the character "Seven") written on it. In Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, this has been changed to Korean hangul which still stands for "Seven".
These rounds are somewhat effective against shielding systems. This is because the rounds are designed to explode. When the projectile hits the energy shield system, the primer ignites and explodes causing a good deal of damage to shield. The bullet’s explosive properties allow it to perform well against vehicles also.
*One shot to the exposed orange flesh of a Hunter will result in a kill, no matter what difficulty setting. This is due to the flesh being flagged as "head".

*In the Halo 2 multiplayer map Tombstone, there is an M6D Pistol crate that's behind the right side of the fence that is stretched over the water trench in the middle of the map. You must zoom in to see it properly.
Differences From The M6C
*During early phases of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversarys development, the upgraded graphics layer for the M6D was that of the Halo: Reach iteration of the M6G, serving as a placeholder until an appropriate graphics skin was created. In the final game, this was changed to the Halo 3 iteration of the M6G.

*The M6D is featured in the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary multiplayer and, by extension, the Anniversary playlists of Halo: Reach. Due to development constraints it retains the Halo: Reach M6G appearance and sounds, but other characteristics of the weapon replicate the M6D. The M6D is a playlist-related feature and isn't available in the Reach custom games.
*Chromed finish to black polymer.
*Early in the development of Halo: Combat Evolved, the pistol that would become the M6D was known as the 60 Magnum Mega Class M4a. This is a reference to the .44 Magnum Mega Class, the standard UEG pistol from the Marathon series.
*Higher accuracy, range, damage, magazine capacity.
*When the player melees with the magnum in Halo 5: Guardians, a grunting sound is made.
*KFA-2 2x scope.
*The mission Truth and Reconciliation is the only mission in Halo CE where the M6D is not present.
*Lower rate of fire.
*The M6D was featured in Bungie's 30th anniversary as the exotic sidearm Forerunner in Destiny 2 obtained by reaching Brave I in Dares of Eternity. The Catalyst upgrade for the gun allows Guardians to throw a frag grenade after achieving a kill with the Forerunner, and when obtaining it, multiversal agent Xûr implies that he retreived the sidearm and its upgrade from the Pillar of Autumn.
*High explosive ammunition.
*Non Dual-wieldable.
*Much slower melee.
*Only part of the slide goes back, for the tip stays stationary.

Tactical Uses
The M6D Pistol is a close-long range weapon and is suitable as a primary weapon. With its high effective range and accuracy as well as high damage, it's useful for engaging almost any target at any range, which makes it an all-purpose weapon. Often, it is much more competent than the Sniper Rifle.

The M6D is useful against any target that is encountered throughout combat. Enemies such as Grunts and Jackals can be quickly dispatched with one well placed headshot and enemies like the Flood can be dispatched in as little as 1-3 shots to the chest, it's generally best use against sniping Flood Carrier Forms where they're in firing range. Unshielded Elites also go down in one shot to the head. However, when Elites have shielding more shots are required to kill them (six shots to the head of a Minor, eight shots to the head of a Major, ten shots to the head of a Spec Ops, and between eighteen and twenty-four shots to the head of an Zealot). Hunters also only require one shot to their exposed flesh on their back or midsection to kill them.

Shots needed to take down your opponents vary based difficulty setting. The info above, with the exception of the Hunters, is taken from the Normal difficulty setting. On Legendary, it takes over 24 shots to take down a banshee, and about 80 shots to destroy a Wraith tank.

Hunters can only take 1 hit to their exposed orange skin from an M6D on any level of difficulty. It is a highly effective tactic to allow the Hunter to charge at you and then, when it exposes its mid section in an attempt to beat you with its shield, fire into its mid section, killing it instantly. The tactic requires nearly perfect timing.

In Multiplayer, some users may use the M6D as their all around weapon due to its high accuracy, and high power. In the PC version of the game, it is the best all-around weapon, except in situations requiring vehicle killing or CQB power. and it is capable of killing a fully shielded player in three shots. The pistol also cuts down the usual strife that surrounds sniper rifles; a player won't necessarily kill their teammates for the AM-2 when they have a mid range weapon with a scope.

PC players love the M6D so much, its hard to replace the gun.  Some even value it over heavy weapons such as fuel rods and rocket launchers.  With a steady hand and a good eye, anything is possible with the pistol.  The only thing that cannot be done with the M6D is to kill a player across a map, like Blood Gulch.

Influences
A possible influence on the design of this weapon is the FP-45 Liberator, a weapon designed in the United States during World War II. The long handle, but short barrel are obvious features. Another possible influence on the design of this pistol is the Desert Eagle, a large, semi-automatic pistol manufactured by Magnum Research which uses a gas-operated mechanism usually found in rifles.

It was mentioned during an episode of the Bungie Podcast that there was an internal debate about how powerful the M6D should have been. Jacob Keyes after giving his M6D to John-117.

The M6D Personal Defense Weapon System,[6] commonly referred to as the M6D Pistol[3] or M6D,[7] is a United Nations Space Command firearm and one of the variants of Misriah Armory's M6 handgun series.[8]

Overview[edit]

Design[edit]

M6D Schematic view

The M6D is a recoil-operated, magazine-fed handgun,[3] chambered in 12.7x40mm ammunition, typically employed with semi-armor-piercing, high-explosive (SAPHE) rounds of that chambering, and feeding from 12-round detachable box magazines.[9][8] It has also been known to be chambered in the .450 Magnum load.[10] The weapon is somewhat unusual for a handgun in that it is capable of both semi-automatic and automatic firing.[4][3] The M6D is one of the M6 series' upscaled variants,[8] being larger than non-upscaled M6s by roughly 117%.[11] The M6D is also an officer's model, and in this capacity was employed by Captain Jacob Keyes on the UNSC Pillar of Autumn.[12][8] Like other officer's model M6s, the weapon is fitted with smart-linked KFA-2 optic for utilization by those employing a heads-up display.[8][13]

M6Ds are produced with a distinctive hard chrome finish.[8] The M6D is relatively distinctive among the M6 family, most notable for the brown hue of the grip, which features small bumps across its surface. The length of the magazine, which integrates a prominent grip extension, makes the weapon appear comparatively very large. Various kanji characters can be observed in different locations on its body.[9][2]

Functionality[edit]

An empty M6D with its slide locked back.

This process occurs with almost imperceptible speed and can be repeated with successive trigger-pulls until the weapon is emptied,[2] at which point the slide will lock back,[14] awaiting the insertion of another magazine. When a fresh magazine is inserted, the slide will then travel forward, stripping the first round from the magazine and chambering it. If the weapon is reloaded before it is completely empty, this process will not occur as the cycle of the slide is uninterrupted. When the weapon is employed in its fully-automatic fire-mode, the trigger does not need to be repeatedly pulled for continuous firing.[2] To prevent accidental firing, the weapon has a safety mechanism which is manually engaged when the firearm is not in active use.[15]

To utilize the weapon's KFA-2 optic, the user must be equipped with headwear or eyewear capable of displaying a HUD.[13] When activated, the weapon projects the view from the scope at x2 magnification on the user's visor with a circular targeting reticle.[2][9]

Performance[edit]

John-117 making use of Jacob Keyes' M6D on the Pillar of Autumn.

The performance of the M6D has been repeatedly indicated to rely heavily on proficiency of its user. John-117 believed that, in the hands of someone who knew how to operate it, the M6D possessed a great deal of stopping power and was one of the UNSC's most effective infantry weapons, being almost as effective as an assault rifle when firing SAPHE ammunition.[1] Likewise, a proficient shooter can also use the M6D to engage targets from a surprising distance when making use of the mounted KFA-2 optic. Its aptitude in this application is so great that, circumstantially, it is preferable to pick off lightly-protected semi-distant enemy targets with this weapon than an assault rifle.[7]

As with many non-specialized human firearms, this weapon can be somewhat inefficient against targets equipped with personal energy shielding, requiring in one instance the expenditure of a full magazine to incapacitate an elite minor.[15] However, headshots with the weapon can be very effective,[7] making careful shot placement of high importance when engaging Covenant forces.[3] They are, of course, not very effective at engaging Covenant vehicles, with rounds fired from the weapon simply ricocheting off the exterior of targets such as the Umbra light transport.[16]

History[edit]

The M6D saw a significant amount of service throughout the Human-Covenant War. It was used by SPARTAN-II operatives throughout Operation: SILENT STORM and the subsequent mission to Netherop in 2526.[1][16] Spartans continued to use the weapon, this time chambered in .450 Magnum ammo, during the Battle of Sigma Octanus IV.[10] Most notable, however, is its usage during the Battle of Installation 04. Throughout the engagement, it was employed heavily by UNSC marines and Navy personnel.[9] Captain Jacob Keyes notably offered his M6D to John-117 to use to evacuate Cortana from the UNSC Pillar of Autumn, which he then went on to utilize on the surface of the ring.[15]

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Depiction[edit]

An M6D as it appears in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.

In Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, the M6D is represented by a repurposed Halo 3 M6G2 magnum model, with markings on the weapon changed to reflect that it is an M6D. It features a black, smooth grip, a shorter magazine, and is polished to a higher sheen than the more prominent depiction from Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 5: Guardians. In all respects save for the "M6D" marking on the slide, it resembles the M6G2.[17]

Trivia[edit]

 • One of the comments on the weapon changes in Halo 2 revolved around the fact that in Halo 1, "the assault rifle handled like an SMG and the pistol handled like a rifle." In Halo 2, the altered weapon loadout featured "a rifle that handles like a rifle, a pistol that handles like a pistol, and an SMG that handles like an SMG."[18]
 • The M6D has Japanese kanji (the character "Seven") written on it. In Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, this has been changed to Korean hangul which still stands for "Seven".
 • One shot to the exposed orange flesh of a Hunter will result in a kill, no matter what difficulty setting. This is due to the flesh being flagged as "head".[verification needed]
 • In the Halo 2 multiplayer map Tombstone, there is an M6D Pistol crate that's behind the right side of the fence that is stretched over the water trench in the middle of the map. You must zoom in to see it properly.
 • During early phases of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary's development, the upgraded graphics layer for the M6D was that of the Halo: Reach iteration of the M6G, serving as a placeholder until an appropriate graphics skin was created. In the final game, this was changed to the Halo 3 iteration of the M6G.
 • The M6D is featured in the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary multiplayer and, by extension, the Anniversary playlists of Halo: Reach. Due to development constraints it retains the Halo: Reach M6G appearance and sounds, but other characteristics of the weapon replicate the M6D.[19] The M6D is a playlist-related feature and isn't available in the Reach custom games.
 • Early in the development of Halo: Combat Evolved, the pistol that would become the M6D was known as the 60 Magnum Mega Class M4a.[20] This is a reference to the .44 Magnum Mega Class, the standard UEG pistol from the Marathon series.
 • When the player melees with the magnum in Halo 5: Guardians, a grunting sound is made.
 • The mission Truth and Reconciliation is the only mission in Halo CE where the M6D is not present.
 • The M6D was featured in Bungie's 30th anniversary as the exotic sidearm Forerunner in Destiny 2 obtained by reaching Brave I in Dares of Eternity. The Catalyst upgrade for the gun allows Guardians to throw a frag grenade after achieving a kill with the Forerunner, and when obtaining it, multiversal agent Xûr implies that he retreived the sidearm and its upgrade from the Pillar of Autumn.
