A Point Defense Gun is a United Nations Space Command starship-mounted weapon that fires 50mm projectiles.
They are used for point-defense, that is to say intercepting nearby enemy starfighters[1] and incoming missiles. They are not used to attack capital ships, and such roles would be fulfilled by other armaments such as Archer missiles. Because human operators lack the reflexes necessary to operate the weapons, autocannons are computer-controlled. They are comparable to the CIWS weapons in use today.
50mm point defense guns are standard armament for UNSC Halcyon-class Cruisers and are usually controlled by the ship's Artificial Intelligence[2].
On Alpha Halo, the ODSTs that recaptured the Pillar of Autumn from the Covenant scavenged 50mm point defense guns from the crashed Halycon-class cruiser and mounted them on Pelicans for transport to Alpha Base.[3]
