The Covenant Navy is the branch of the Covenant military responsible solely for space operations. Its roles include ship-to-ship combat, orbital bombardment, the deployment of fighters and bombers and the method of delivery for the Covenant Army.[1] At its best, it fielded thousands of warships, most being able to carry fighters, dropships, ground troops and vehicles.

Great Schism

Throughout the majority of the Covenant Civil War or commonly known as the "Great Schism," (as referred to by the Covenant Separatists) the Covenant Military was violently splintered between those loyal to Covenant, who continued to believe in the Prophet's wisdom and the separatists, who followed the Arbiter against them. As the battle raged, the High Prophet of Truth formally transferred command of the Covenant Navy to the Jiralhanae, a position once exclusively held by the Sangheili. The Covenant Separatists wiped out the primary Loyalist fleet at the Battle of Installation 00. It seems that the majority of the fleet. and virtually all the capital warships larger than the standard CCS-class battlecruiser, sided with the Sangheili as they had a monopoly on command positions prior to the Great Schism. The Separatists numbers were reduced by the disasters at Onyx, where a battlegroup headed by the Reverence class cruiser Incorruptible was destroyed, and at Joyous Exultation, where the massive Combined Fleet of Righteous Purpose, headed by Imperial Admiral Xytan Jar Wattinree aboard the CSO-class supercarrier Sublime Transcendence, was consumed by a Nova bomb. This limited the organized Sangheili fleet to the Fleet of Retribution, which was led by the CAS class assault carrier Shadow of Intent. The Jiralhanae fleet was limited to Truth's fleet, which outnumbered the Sangheili three to one, although the types of ships are undisclosed. It is known to contain CCS class battlecruisers and perhaps some formely Sangheili controlled CAS class assault carriers.
