They are an entirely alien creature, apparently unrelated to any known [[Earth]] creature. That said, they do bear slight similarities to several more familiar animals. In overall appearance, they look similar to the extinct pterosaur. They have a double set of wings, and a long, rigid tail which give them a strikingly similar appearance to Earth's dragonflies as well. It is unknown how they came to populate so many different places, although the fact that they appear on worlds either created or visited by the Forerunners suggests that they were transplanted either purposely or accidentally (like [[Rat (species)|rats]]) by the Forerunners.

The Dino-Birds were first seen on Installation 05 on the level Delta Halo. They appeared again in Halo 3 on the multiplayer maps Guardian and Epitaph.
