Halopedia, originally known simply as "Halo Wiki", began in late 2004 as a project to document the Halo fictional universe. After the creation of halowiki.net, the wiki changed its name to "Halopedia" along with domain to www.halopedia.org. While halowiki.net and Halopedia appear to be in direct competition against each other, they are actually sister projects that have very different goals; Halopedia is a wiki that concerns the canon Halo universe, while halowiki.net is a essentially a "multiplayer repository". The wiki gained mainstream media attention in early 2006, one in particular from Bungie. This attention improved the wiki's reputation as the online Halo encyclopedia. This success however was detrimental to Halopedia; the wiki's growing size was producing a bill in excess of 150 US$ a month. Throughout May, June and July of 2006, the site's accessibility went down sporadically, until it finally went offline for several weeks. Halopedia was eventually merged with halo.wikia.com, a wiki hosted on Wikia.

The wiki continued to grow in anticipation of many new projects planned for the Halo franchise, such as the Halo movie. On August 12th, 2008, the 5,000th article was created by CommanderTony, and on July 19th, 2009, the six Usergroups of Halopedia were disbanded due to inactivity.
Following a mandatory skin change and stricter Terms of Use in mid-2010 by Wikia, Halopedia moved back to an independent domain, hosted by the previous host.

In October 17, 2010, the wiki moved to a private domain, halopedian.com, along with its then-current administration team and community members.

Halo Wiki, as it was known back then, was founded by Template:Name, with the help of Template:Name who hosted the site, and launched on November 4, 2004. Initially created to supplement his clan, the site shift its focus to cover the Halo universe in later periods. After the creation of halowiki.net, the site was renamed to "Halopedia" and moved its domain to www.halopedia.org.[notes 1] Since the renaming, the wiki has actively document the developments of the Halo franchise and the fictional universe, along with gameplay information and help.[1]

In 2006, the original host was unable to financially support the wiki, prompting Halopedia to migrate to Wikia.[2] From 2007 to 2010, Halopedia was one of Wikia's most active and popular wikis following the release of Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach. In 2009, the wiki was awarded as the "Best Resource Website of 2009" by Hawty McBloggy, now a member of 343 Industries.[3]

Following a mandatory skin change and stricter Terms of Use in mid-2010 by Wikia, Halopedia moved back to an independent domain, hosted by the previous host.[2][4]

Halopedia has come to be regarded as accurate and reliable among the Halo fanbase and media alike[5]; the wiki was even used as a source for recent published literatures.[6][7][8][9][10][11]
