Nicole was born on December 19, 2531 in the city of New Legaspi in the state of Katagalugan on Mars. At the age of six, she was abducted by agents of the Office of Naval Intelligence and conscripted into the second class of the SPARTAN-II program.

She does not have a gun to shoot or melee opponents, as that would change the nature of the game. She is a heavy-weight, slow and powerful. There are those which find the slow attribute strange for a SPARTAN, especially encased in the MJOLNIR armour, because each member of the original SPARTAN II project, including John-117 (AKA Master Chief), had much faster reaction times and general speed. Her moves include the Pillar of Autumn (throwing opponents through the air), MAC Lunge (fast right fist), Active Camouflage (which makes her invisible), the Grunt Punt, the Great Journey, and a Plasma Grenade throw.
According to her character biography, Nicole has Type O blood, and is of Filipino descent. Her hobbies include competition shooting and watching anime. She is also mentioned as liking the Filipino dessert halo-halo.

This flies in the face of previous canon as the members of the Spartan-II program were abducted much earlier, in the year 2517, rendering Spartan-458 far too young to be a member of the Spartan-II program. Her designation 458 is further proof of her not being part of the Spartan-II program, as there were only 150 candidates were screened (of which 75 of 150 were chosen), all of which were designated a number between 1 and 150. Yet she wears the specialized Mjolnir armor the armor only given to Spartan IIs.  However, it is also possible she belongs to the Class 3 of the Spartan II program, the Spartan-III program or an even later program than the Spartan-IIIs.

Nicole's movement controls were originally modeled on the character Bayman's set. Designer Tomonobu Itagaki realized a simplistic and effortless palette-swap would be boring to both fans of Dead or Alive and Halo. The Bayman moves were then treated as a starting point until the designers reinvented the Spartan as a unique and exceptional character with every move in her arsenal paying homage to a Halo move. In keeping with the idea of English being the language of the UNSC, Nicole is the only character in Dead or Alive 4 who speaks English, although she occasionally speaks Japanese. When a taunt is used Nicole smacks her fist into her open palm and activates active camo.

RealworldWhen designing Nicole for the DOA game her orginal move list was originally modeled on DOA4 character, Bayman's set. Designer Itagaki realized it would be pretty unimpressive if it was just a palette-swap, boring to both fans of DOA and Halo. So using the the Bayman moves as a conceptual starting point the designers slowly reinvented the Spartan until she was her own, unique character. Petty Officer, Second Class Nicole-458 is a SPARTAN-II supersoldier in the United Nations Space Command's Naval Special Warfare Command.

Biography[edit]

Nicole was born on December 19, 2531 in the city of New Legaspi in the state of Katagalugan on Mars. At the age of six, she was abducted by agents of the Office of Naval Intelligence and conscripted into the second class of the SPARTAN-II program.[1]

According to her character biography, Nicole has Type O blood, and is of Filipino descent. Her hobbies include competition shooting and watching anime. She is also mentioned as liking the Filipino dessert halo-halo.[1]

Canon status[edit]

Nicole was introduced as an unlockable character for the fighting game Dead or Alive 4, with a non-canonical in-universe backstory crafted to explain her presence in the game. Team Ninja originally asked to use John-117, but Bungie declined, due to fictional constraints.[1] Bungie and 343 Industries have confirmed that Nicole is "based on a 'real' and properly defined Spartan", but her appearance in Dead or Alive 4 is non-canonical. The extent of her character's canonicity remains unknown.[2]

Non-canon biography[edit]

In October 2552, Nicole-458's unit was preparing for a classified mission on Nassau Station when the ONI stealth ship UNSC Apocalypso tumbled into real space – being carried along in the wake of a freak slipspace anomaly. The anomaly intersected Nassau Station, creating a semi-stable "bubble" in the space-time continuum on its way back to the 21st century. For the time being, Nicole-458 is trapped in the 21st century; she guards Nassau Station's secrets with anything but lethal force, as she realizes that killing someone in the past could have dire consequences in the future. She waits for the "bubble" to collapse and hopefully return her to the year 2552.[1]

Character design[edit]

"And that's how you hit like a girl."
— SPARTAN-458

Unique attacks[edit]

Nicole-458 has several unique moves. Most of them are named in reference to the Halo series.

 • Slipspace Straight Combo: YYY or YYY
 • Pillar of Autumn: YY→YYY or YY→YYY
 • Grunt Punt Combo: YY→YYB or YY→YYB
