Following the Covenants [[Operation: ATHENA|failure]] at the [[Absolute Record]], Jul Mdama  pivoted to trying to take control of Sanghelios. To this end, Covenant forces would take control of the [[Argent Moon]] and scour it in hopes of finding any materiel to help with this goal.{{Ref/Book|HM|Page=185}}

===Setbacks===
Prior to the attack on Sanghelios, the [[Swords of Sanghelios]] launched their own assault on Hesduros, hoping to kill 'Mdama and destroy his Covenant for good. The Swords didn't manage to achive there main aims, but the offensive did devastate much of the Covenants major infrastructure across Hesduros. Following this defeat, Jul and his forces had to completely abandoned Hesduros.{{Ref/Novel|LoO|Chapter=5}}

===Ignition of conflict===
Around [[2558#October|October 17, 2558]], Jul 'Mdama's forces besieged Sanghelios.{{Ref/Reuse|osfm95}} As their forces attacked, other assets on the planet rose up and Sanghelios burst into a worldwide conflict.{{Ref/Reuse|loochapt21}} The majority of [[Category:Sangheili states|States]] experienced heavy fighting.{{Ref/Reuse|osfm95}} Despite the conflicts on the planet previous to this point, this was the first time that fighting on Sanghelios was characterized as a ''global'' war.{{Ref/Reuse|loochapt21}}

Although the Arbiter did not formally request support from the UNSC, personnel on the {{UNSCShip|Infinity}} were given a warning order that intervention to support the Swords of Sanghelios might be required.{{Ref/Reuse|osfm95}}

During the assault, [[Jul 'Mdama's Covenant]] would gain control of [[Sunaion]] and began to plan for a strike on [[Vadam]] while the Arbiter defended the inland portions of Vadam. However, local Swords of Sanghelios forces would be made aware of this and would establish a forward operating base in the ruins of Nuusra. On the morning{{Ref/Game|H5G|Detail=[[Mission Intel#Enemy Lines|Mission Intel - Enemy Lines - Unggoy Personal Log 023]]}} of October 27, 2558, the Covenant made a last-ditch attempt to kill the Arbiter{{Ref/Reuse|loochapt21}}{{Ref/Level|Id=swords|H5G|[[Swords of Sanghelios (level)|Swords of Sanghelios]]}} at [[Nuusra]]. Partway through the battle, the Spartans of [[Fireteam Osiris]] would assist Swords forces in repelling the Covenant and extracting the [[Arbiter]] [[Thel 'Vadam]].{{Ref/Reuse|swords}}

After discussions took place between [[human]] forces and the Swords,{{Ref/Level|Id=alliance|H5G|[[Alliance]]}} Fireteam Osiris would move to a Forerunner installation to retrieve a [[Constructor]].{{Ref/Level|H5G|[[Enemy Lines]]}}

With it, the humans modified it to activate the Guardian beneath the [[water|sea]] [[city]] of Sunaion. Sunaion was also at this point, the Covenant's last stronghold. Together, the humans and the Swords of Sanghelios left Nuusra to attack.{{Ref/Level|H5G|[[Before the Storm]]}}

The Swords of Sanghelios moved into Sunaion deploying Thel himself and Fireteam Osiris. They would split up with Osiris moving to take out anti-aircraft weapons. At least one ship in the air above the battle fell into the [[Csurdon Sea]] below. Osiris eventually went into the under city fighting Covenant forces there. The Guardian buried below began to rise, and with it Created forces joined the fray.{{Ref/Level|Id=sunaion|H5G|[[Battle of Sunaion (level)|Battle of Sunaion]]}} After Fireteam Osiris managed to make there way aboard the departing Guardian, the Swords would finish off the remaining Covenant forces.

Following the conclusion to the battle of Sunion, Cortana would send a second Guadian to Sanghelios, wiping out the remaining Covenant ships, as well as shutting down power across the hemisphere.{{Ref/Reuse|badbchapt1}} The Created would eventually take total control of Sanghelios, as well as placing an administrator in charge of the Planet.{{Ref/Novel|Id=outchapt1|Out|Chapter=1}}
