The Ranking System in Halo: Reach is based on Credits (cR) earned through Forge, Multiplayer, Campaign, and Firefight matches. Credits are earned after every game, and you earn extra credits for medals earned during the match, (e.g. Double Kills) victory bonuses, commendations, and Daily/Weekly challenges.
Note that Credits spent on armory purchases do not decrease your rank. However, Credits (cR) earned from any other feature (Forge and Custom Games) are likely to be a lot less than those that would be awarded for playing multiplayer via Xbox Live. All ranking is currently capped at Lt. Colonel Rank 3 at this time.

*NOTE - In parenthesis, is the number of cR required to promote to the next rank. For example, to advance from Captain Grade 3 to Major requires a gain of 46,000 cR. There is no minimum amount of cR required for any rank.
- New ranks past Lt. Colonel Grade 3 are set to be available soon. Bungie stated in the weekly update of 09/24/10 "We’ll absolutely be raising that Cap (for free, of course) in due time. When the level cap is lifted, new ranks become available and there’s yet more armor to unlock. But how and when are we going to lift the cap? More appropriately, what are you going to do to lift it? There'll be another time."[1]
- The ranks Colonel and Commander have been confirmed by the armory of Lt. Colonels. While there are several visible pieces that require Commander, the Gold Visor is the only piece that can be seen that requires the Colonel rank.
- When you reach the Major rank, you can preview Emile's skull design on the EVA helmet. When you reach the rank of Commander(when Bungie increases the cap, that is), you are able to purchase Emile's helmet at the heavy price of 120,000cR.
- The General rank image has not officially confirmed yet by Bungie. This image was found on the Halo: Reach Forums do to a glitch on the career stats a certain user. Click here to see forum post Image of glitch Click here for first knowledge of Rank/glitch and User it happened to
- The Inheritor rank can be seen as "MAX RANK" in many screenshots and videos released by hackers and modders. Legally, however, this rank is only accessible to Bungie employees.
