Neill Blomkamp

Neill Blomkamp is a South African Vancouver-based director of short films and advertisements. Neill Blomkamp works with RATEL VFX in Vancouver, a small studio specializing in TVC VFX. He is represented by RSA Films in Los Angeles, and Spy Films in Toronto. Blomkamp employs a documentary-style, hand-held, cinéma vérité technique, blending seamlessly with naturalistic and photo-realistic computer-generated imagery effects.

In Aug 2006, he was picked by Peter Jackson and hired by Microsoft to direct the movie adaptation of the hit video game Halo, which was due for release in summer 2008 prior to its putting on hold by the involved parties.

How faithful do you plan on staying to the design of Master Chief's armor?

Neill Blomkamp: Master Chief is certainly something that I do not want to change too much at all, there are certain things inside the Halo universe that are sacred and he's the main one. Having said that, there is a need to revise certain parts of him, just from a purely technical standpoint, he has to actually be able to move like a human, and the game design right now does not allow for full motion freedom, which we will have to achieve.

Quint: Guy in a suit? CGI creation? Mixture of both?

Neill Blomkamp: Well, the film has to have a feeling of reality, and so that means that I want to keep him real as much as I can, there is a necessity for him to become cg in sequences where a guy in a suit would just not work, but for the most part I am aiming for real.^[1]

Out the Door?

After Fox and Universal pulled out of the Halo Movie project (See Halo Movie Timeline), many speculated that the two studios were nervous about having first-time feature director Neill Blomkamp directing the picture. However, Peter Jackson's representative, Ken Kamins stated that "Everybody is supremely confident in Neill, part of what excited Peter and Fran was Neill's vision. We're very confident this film will move forward with the creative partners intact, who will take the film to production."^[2]

On April 10th, 2013 Neil Blomkamp announced that the cancellation of his previous plans did not kill his enthusiasm to create a Halo film. While acknowledging that he still desired to direct it, he states that he would only do so if he had more control over the project.^[3]
