David was the boyfriend of Doctor Hershey [1]. He proposed to the doctor, and moved out of their apartment after her refusal, and spending a night on the couch. Hershey wasn't quite entirely certain why she said no, but she was sure that to accept she would of had to be entierely certain that is what she wanted.
