- "I would have been your daddy, but the dog beat me over the fence!"
- — Avery Johnson, taunting an enemy
Dogs, also known by their scientific name Canis lupus familiaris, and colloquially known as "man's best friend", are a semi-sentient mammal native to Earth and have a long history of domestication by humans. They are often kept as personal companions by human owners, who will look after the dog and take care of its food. Dogs also serve as patrols in the military[1], tracking suspects and detecting illegal substances in police forces, etc.
Dogs were likely first domesticated by humans in East Asia, the lineage splitting from wolves approximately 100,000 years ago. Since then, they have maintained close links with humans in many ways.
