User:CIA391/Glitches/List of glitches in Halo: Combat Evolved

From Halopedia, the Halo wiki

The following is a list of glitches in Halo: Combat Evolved.

Fifty-degree Banshee fire

The fifty-degree Banshee fire is a glitch that may only be performed in Halo: Combat Evolved or Halo: Combat Evolved for PC.

Walkthrough

  1. Play any level with a Banshee (i.e. Assault on the Control Room or Two Betrayals).
  2. Fly the Banshee to a tree and fire its main weapon while facing said tree and while in proximity to the tree. All your plasma will barely graze the tree and shoot upwards, so you could, in theory, take out units directly above or below you.

Although this is possible to do with the Banshee's Fuel Rod shot, it is not safe because the Fuel Rod has its own set of in-game physics and thus is affected by gravity. As such, it may sometimes hit the tree and damage the player.

Air swimming

Air Swimming is a phenomenon that happens in Halo: Combat Evolved

Walkthrough

This phenomenon occurs when an enemy is killed by a grenade explosion and their body gets stuck between two terrain objects. The Halo game engine necessitates that every in-game object have its own 'box' of dedicated space. This 'box' is usually what the player runs into, instead of the object itself. When a lifeless body is too large to fit in between the boxes of two objects, it ends up hovering above them, looking as though it were trying to swim through the air. The event occurs most commonly with Jackals.

In Halo: Combat Evolved, when bodies are propelled by explosions, they will sometimes appear to be "frozen" if they hit an object in mid-flight; this can also make them appear to be swimming. On a related note, when a Jackal or a Grunt is killed by an explosion, its corpse may appear "wedged" within a metallic structure, floating above the floor.

Assault on the Control Room shortcut

The Assault on the Control Room shortcut is a trick that can be performed on the Halo: Combat Evolved level Assault on the Control Room to get to the bottom of the first canyon without spawning any enemies.

Walkthrough

The shortcut requires very good timing, so it may take some practice before you can get it. There are two ways to do the trick:

First, go on to the first bridge, and make sure you have a plasma grenade. Try not to wake up any Grunts, as they will be annoying and dangerous. Throw a plasma grenade on the ground, right next to a Shade. Right when the grenade explodes, quickly press X on Xbox (default controls) or E in Halo: Combat Evolved for PC to get in the Shade. If you're lucky, the shade will right itself, and you will fall safely to the ground.

Another way that requires skill, practice, luck and co-op is to jump. This cannot be done on Halo PC. First, when you get to the bridge with the sleeping grunts, jump off next to the Shade on the left side, and you will fall on a thin ledge. Stay close to the wall to do this. If you accidentally wake up any Grunts, the Elites will shoot at you. Since you lose shields when you fall, you can die. Run down the ledge to the lowest part, then a little further. Have your partner commit suicide, then fall down. You must be close to the wall or this will not work. You will fall past a ledge, where your partner should respawn. You will respawn next to him. Run along the ledge, taking care not to fall, as it is slippery. Run over to the part that is directly above the large rocks. Drop onto them, and you will survive.

At the bottom, there are no enemies, and all the usable vehicles that the enemy usually steals can be used. The player can continue on with the level until the end with no enemies present, although sometimes some doors may become locked and certain glitches need to be used to bypass them.

Banshee launch

Banshee launch is a term used to refer to numerous Banshee-related super jumping techniques. Halo: Combat Evolved

Walkthrough

In the first Halo game, the Banshee model is very different, and the Wingtip Method (described below) does not work. However, with 500% shields (as part of a gametype) or an overshield, a different technique can be attempted.

Starting with the Banshee flipped upside-down like in the other launches, simply PFR under the lower wing in the hole between the two bars that form the wing. If timed correctly, the trick can send the player up to the invisible ceiling in Blood Gulch.

Bullet hole glitch

The bullet hole glitch is a texture glitch that occurs in Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo: Combat Evolved for PC. It results in bullet holes in walls that are inexplicably stained with human blood.

Walkthrough

Halo PC

Fire a bullet from a human weapon nearly parallel to any surface that will leave a bullet hole (i.e. a wall or hard ground, not dirt or ice). At the point where the bullet hits, there will be a mysterious splotch of human blood.

Halo: Combat Evolved

Exit a level's boundaries by means of wall hacking. That is, make the game move Master Chief past a wall of some kind, such as by performing an exiting movement (with a Shade, for instance). Then, shoot any corner or edge of an object's surface with a human weapon, and the blood should appear in the bullet holes.
