The Forerunner-Flood war was a pivotal galactic conflict that occurred between the Forerunners and the Flood parasite. It was started on G617 g1 around 97,745 BCE and lasted approximately three centuries. The Forerunners concluded the war in 97,445 BCE with the activation of the Halo Array, seven superweapons that purged the galaxy of all sentient life in order to stop the Flood. The conflict ended the Forerunners' eons-long rule in the galaxy; most of their empire having fallen to the Flood, and the few remaining members of the species going into exile.

Thomas Lasky: "You say that like soldiers and humanity are two different things. Soldiers aren't machines. We're just people. I'll let you have the deck to yourself."
John-117: "She said that to me once... about being a machine."
