Research & development are often done under a number of distinct projects, each given a unique codename. These projects are often done under United Nations Space Command oversight, but have been done by individuals and groups.

| Project: MAGNES | Project: MAGNES was the project proposed by a civilian engineer that led to the creation of the Grappleshot. |
| Project: ORION | Project: ORION, also put as ORION Project was the UNSC Navy's first effort to create a special forces unit of biochemically augmented supersoldiers. Under the operational control of Naval Special Warfare Group One, the project was created to combat the growing Insurrection throughout the human Outer Colonies. The project enjoyed limited success but was ultimately disbanded after several years. |
