| There appears to be some confusion over expeditionary and defensive forces in the Haloverse in general. Army would typically be a defense force stationed to defend a colony. Air Force would seem to be a similar role, but defense of the sky or local planetary space. The Navy and Marines are primarily the expeditionary forces of the UNSC that would travel colony to colony.

| This is my take:
| |
|
| |
| '''UNSCEF'''
| |
| Navy (FLEETCOM and NAVSPECWAR) - [this is the fleet, plus attached Marines and ODSTs and Spartan IIs]
| |
| ---Marines (Navy sub-branch)
| |
| Spartans
| |
|
| |
| '''UNSCDF'''
| |
| Navy (NAVLOGCOM) - [this includes ONI, Spartan IIIs, plus UNSC groundside bases and space stations]
| |
| Army
| |
| Air Force

| Incidentally, there is actually a graphic texture in Halo Reach that shows the eagle UNSC logo with the UNSCEF in the banner for 'expeditionary forces' just as we first saw UNSCDF on Cairo station for defense forces. I'm pretty sure it's an unused texture file but I can't rule out it wasn't seen in Reach. I just don't recall it. -[[User:ScaleMaster117|ScaleMaster117]] ([[User talk:ScaleMaster117|talk]]) 14:45, 22 August 2013 (EDT)
