National Governments were governing factions which led the nations on Earth for millennium before the dawn of the United Nations Space Command. They started out as primitive tribes. Over time they advanced into city states like Sparta, Athens, and Rome. The more successful city states managed to form small countries, nations, then empires. For a long period the greatest empire in western civilization was Rome, whom based their success off of that of the Greeks. After Rome fell to German barbarians in 476 A.D., Europe went though a period of anarchy (also known as the Dark Ages), eventually entering the Middle Ages. The dominant power at the time was the Spanish Empire with the desovery of the New World, before being surpassed by the British Empire, which became the largest empire in Earth's history. After the First World War, Britain collapsed as a superpower and the United States took the stand. After World War II the new superpower of Russia, along with the United States, plunged themselves into the Cold War with the disconery of fission and later fusion. The Nuclear Age however led, in the 1960's, advanced into the space age, followed by Europe, Japan, and eventually the rest of the world. When the nuclear superpowers signed a treaty to let go of the nuclear arms (eventually leading to the the end of the Cold War), third world countries got their hands on nuclear technology and led to terrorisim, and the conflict between other smaller nations such as Pakistan and India.

The National Governments of Earth engaged in several colonial proxy-wars, one of which was the Interplanetary War in the 2100's. Ultimately, the individual national governments on Earth were subsumed by a centralized Earth government known as the United Earth Government, which controls the United Nations Space Command.[1] However, though the influence of the governments waned, the individual cultures, languages, and other such unique beliefs existed among the people under the UNSC until much later.
