He could have never been named Mendez but I might be wrong.<font color="olive">The Consumed</font> <font color="brown">,The Dead</font> <font color="purple">,and Living</font>

Is that all you're going by? The fact that SPARTANs tend to train SPARTANs?

In Lessons Learned, he states that he turned in his stripes but "retirement didn't sit all that well with me". Since he is in charge of security on Trevelyan, wouldn't it be safe to assume he's back in Navy service? I mean, it's technically possible he's now a civilian (like Jun) but given that line as well as his interactions with the other personnel (plus Tom calling him "Chief Mendez", though that could easily be out of habit), I think it's more plausible to assume his former rank has been restored. --Jugus (talk) 02:28, 15 September 2016 (EDT)

:I don't know, the short story later lists him as a civilian again "Civilian or not these days, and despite all of his peacetime talk, he didn't walk around Onyx unarmed." I'd assume that he just is remaining active within the UNSC. He is also referred to as retired in Hunt the Truth and Waypoint. --<span style="color: #2B1AAA;">NightHammer</span><span style="color: #2B1AAA;">(talk)</span><span style="color: #2B1AAA;">(contribs)</span> 13:32, 15 September 2016 (EDT)
::You're right, I must've missed that part from Lessons Learned. It's a bit odd but I guess they wanted to stick with what they'd previously stated in regards to his retirement. --Jugus (talk) 23:46, 15 September 2016 (EDT)
:::I'm personally surprised they brought him back to serve on Trevelyan. But I guess it makes sense considering that he is hanging out at an ONI facility by 2558. --<span style="color: #2B1AAA;">NightHammer</span><span style="color: #2B1AAA;">(talk)</span><span style="color: #2B1AAA;">(contribs)</span> 23:51, 15 September 2016 (EDT)
