'''Diego Garcia''' is a small tropical island in the Indian Ocean of [[Earth]], about 1,000 miles south of the southern India coast and far east of the "African Horn". It has been a military base since the 1970's. In 1941 '''RAF''' (British Royal Air Force) Gan was built near there and was shut down in 1976, to become Gan Internation Airport. In 1965, the Chagos Archipelago (a group of islands which include Diego Garcia) became a [[British]] Indian Ocean Territory and continued to be during the 21st Century.  

The [[UNSC]] base on the island launched the first counterattacks against the [[Covenant]] when they invaded [[New Mombasa]] in Kenya, Africa in [[2552]] during [[Battle of Earth]]. Among the units to respond was the [[77th Marine Regiment]] and the [[405th]] UNSC Marine Corps Unit. Later in the battle, a Covenant capital ship was sent in to destroy the base. <ref>[[Halo Encyclopedia]]</ref>. It is unknown whether it succeeded in doing so.
