Like [[John-117]] and the upcoming [[SPARTAN-B312]], the Rookie is intended to be a faceless character for the player to integrate themselves into, so that they may experience the campaign in a much more firsthand manner. As such, his face is never seen, not even in [[Firefight]], and is assisted further by the fact that he never speaks, aside from assorted grunts and groans throughout the gameplay and a whistle to Vergil in a secret cutscene. As such, he is a true silent protagonist, unlike the Master Chief, who was silent during gameplay but spoke freely during cutscenes. However, the character himself has had much speculation arise around his backstory. However, if the player plays cooperative with another player in the New Mombasa Streets Level, turn on your visor and stare at the fellow player for a while, you could actually see the face of the rookie. This face is similar to Mickey's and is not confirmed to be his actual face.

The Rookie’s initials, JD, are typically assumed to stand for “John Doe”, a typical placeholder name given to a male when their true identity is unknown or must be withheld for legal reasons. It has also been theorized the Rookie’s first name may be “James” because occasionally on the level {{Levelname|Coastal Highway}}, Buck will say from the gunner seat - "Keep her steady James."{{Verify}}. The Rookie’s last name has also been suggested to be “Dante” due to ''Halo 3: ODST''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s many parallels to Dante’s journey through the [[Audio Logs|9 circles]] [[New Mombasa|of Hell]] in ''The Divine Comedy'' while being led safely by a "Vergil".
