The Pelican brings them to [[Crow's Nest (Base)|Crow's Nest]] which is used as a local base of operations by the [[UNSC]]. Here, [[Commander]] [[Miranda Keyes]] and [[Fleet Admiral]] [[Terrence Hood]] plan a last-ditch effort to stop the Covenant from activating an artifact uncovered outside the ruins of the city of [[New Mombasa]] built long ago by the [[Forerunner]]s, the ancient race the Covenant worship as gods. If activated, this artifact will activate the [[Halo Array]], which the Covenant Loyalists believe will herald a sublimation event called the [[Great Journey]] and propel the faithful to godhood, but will in fact wipe out all sentient life in the galaxy. Their plan is to have John-117 and a small group of marines punch a hole in Truth's anti-air defenses, so that Lord Hood can initiate a low level air-strike on the artifact. Their planning is quickly interrupted when power is cut and the [[Prophet of Truth|High Prophet of Truth]] broadcasts an announcement to all surviving human forces that their doom is inevitable. He also speaks to John-117 directly, saying that even the Spartan could not escape from the Covenant. Soon after that, the Covenant Loyalists discover the facility and mount a heavy assault. The many small number of Marines surviving immediately began a push to the hanger, where nearby Pelicans were attempting to fly in and evacuate the many wounded Marines inside the base. After all the wounded were evacuated, Miranda Keyes and the rest of the command group evacuated too, leaving behind a large bomb that would destroy the entire base. As John-117 evacuates the remaining forces from Crow's Nest, Sergeant Johnson reported that the Covenant had attacked the command center and disarmed the bomb. John-117 was ordered to kill all the Brutes inside the center and rearm the bomb. After the Spartan fought his way to the command center and killed the Brute Chieftain inside, he reactivated the bomb. Miranda Keyes and Sergeant Johnson soon found him a way out of the base before the bomb explodes: a service elevator that lead to the basement in the hangers. John than quickly ran to the elevator as several smaller charges went off around the base. As he activated the elevator and started to go down, the bomb exploded, destroying the entire base, killing all the Covenant still inside, and sent the elevator with John-117 in it plunging down to the basement. Deep underground, the Master Chief regrouped with the surviving Marines and made his way into the African City of [[Voi]], [[Kenya]] via the [[Tsavo Highway (Location)|Tsavo Highway]]. After saving Sergeant Stacker and his convoy along, the Master Chief and the rest of the Marines pushed their way to the road that lead to Voi. After destroying the shield generator that blocked the way into the city, Miranda Keyes quickly landed with a Pelican with reinforcements while she notified Lord Hood. Sometime afterward, John-117 along with a handful of Marines destroy the Covenant anti-air defenses Lord Hood leads the last of Earth's military ships against Truth and the artifact. As Hood mounts his attack on the Prophet, Truth activates the artifact and creates an enormous slipspace portal, into which all the Covenant Loyalist ships retreat.
