'''National Governments''' were governing factions which led the nations on [[Earth]] for milleinia before the dawn of the UNSC. They started out as primitive tribes. Over time they advanced into citie states like Sparta, Rome, and Hong Kong. The more successful city states managed to form empires. The greatest empire in western civilization was Rome, whom based their success off of that of the Greeks. After Rome fell to German barbarians in 476 A.D., Europe went though a period of anarchy, eventually entering the Middle Ages. After about a thousand years, the United States was born, and later it, along with two other powers, China and Russia, advanced into the space age, followed by Europe, Japan, and eventually the rest. The National Governments of Earth engaged in several colonial proxy-wars, one of which was the [[Interplanetary War]] in the 2100's. Ultimately, the individual national governments on Earth collapsed, paving the way for the creation of a centralized Earth government known as the [[United Earth Government]], which controls the [[United Nations Space Command]]. <ref>http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/h/halo/storyline.htm</ref> However, though the governments collapsed, the individual cultures, languages, and other such unique beliefs existed among the people under the UNSC.
