In [[2559]], after 28 years of drifting in space the UNSC ''Spirit of Fire'' found way to the orbit of the Forerunner [[Installation 00]], known as the Ark. Awakened from the cryo-sleep, Douglas as part of the Red Team eventually traveled down to the Ark to find out how to establish contact with the UNSC and investigate an emergency beacon being broadcast by [[Isabel]] from the Ark Research Outpost. However on the surface of the Ark they encountered a hostile, violent mercenary faction known as the [[Banished]], led by the cunning [[Jiralhanae]] warlord [[Atriox]], who ambushed the Spartans and easily wounded Douglas severely, by crushing his left shoulder. Red Team was forced to retreat, and Atriox ordered Jiralhanae to hunt them down and capture them, since he wished to learn where they came from.
