:Flight is pretty complicated, simply flapping doesn't cut it. It's rather unlikely that such a specialized mechanism would be there's suddenly on Earth when it was useless on their homeworld. Even on a heavier planet, though, it may be due to the atmosphere, as with a sufficiently thick one a winged creature could pull off a "swimming" akin to flight.
