They couldn't have been gone ''too'' long, since Cortana would be completely rampant (or destroyed in the case of being gone for a very long time). People, sometimes we don't need a slap in the face word from the devs to confirm stuff. Halo 3 had a cliffhanger ending with them floating toward a Forerunner planet. Then in the new trailer, they end up being sucked in to a very familiar planet with a whole new adventure ahead.
