Race is a free-for-all and team multiplayer gametype in Halo: Combat Evolved, in which players compete against each other, preferably with a vehicle(such as a Warthog or Ghost), but also on foot, though the latter will most likely result in a loss if others are using vehicles. The objective of the game is to be the first player or team to reach all the checkpoints of which there can be a maximum of fifteen. It is ideally played on the large, very flat map Blood Gulch, as opposed to the only other vehicle-enabled map in Halo: Combat Evolved, Sidewinder, which is too tricky to navigate as some of the checkpoints spawn on ledges which are high and near impossible to reach while driving a Warthog. Race was taken out of Halo 2. The reason is not known but it may have been because it was not a popular game type. The game type Territories that was not in Halo: Combat Evolved but appears in Halo 2 may have been a remake of Race with a few modifications. Much of the game play is similar but this may be coincidence.

A Bungie weekly update mentioned a gametype with emphasis on vehicles, possibly hinting at the return of this gametype in Halo 3. However, Race did not return again in Halo 3.
Events
Once a player has completed a lap, then the the screen will read, on the top left corner, the lap completed and time it took in seconds, accurate to one decimal place. For example, it will say:
lap 1 of 3 completed <br />
time 106.3 seconds

An arrow will always point toward your objective, as shown in the image.

However, if you are directly facing the direction of the next checkpoint, there will be a flag icon above the location, even though there is no flag involved in this mode.
