The '''motion scanner''' is a small handheld motion detector in use by the [[Covenant]]. These devices were given to sentries who were posted on the edges of an encampment or strong point. They could then detect incoming units and vehicles and sound an alarm.<ref name="fs">'''Halo: First Strike''', ''page 26''</ref>

On [[2552#August|August 30, 2552]], during the [[Fall of Reach]], the [[Unggoy]] [[Zawaz]] was assigned to be a lookout with a motion scanner for the landing zone of a [[Unidentified Covenant cruiser|Covenant cruiser]]. He detected three incoming [[Type-26 Ground Support Aircraft|Banshees]] and assumed they were likely to be [[Sangheili]] in a secret mission and did not set off the alarm. Piloting the Banshees were actually three [[SPARTAN-II Program|Spartan-IIs]], who soon destroyed the cruiser and the entire landing zone with it.{{Ref/Reuse|fs}}
