*In keeping with the similarities between the Chief and Ripley, both characters seem to be a rarity in that they can survive encounters with the Flood and the Xenomorphs, respectively. In Ripley's case, she relies on her instincts and her experience with the Aliens to defeat and evade them, and in sometimes uses a "powered suit" to defeat them. In the Chief's case he relies on his combat experience as well as his advanced genetic enhancement, armor, and shields to help him defeat the Flood. Both characters encounter a few other major characters who can contend with these foes, for example Ripley becomes a mother figure to Newt in Aliens, who was the sole survivor of the infestation and had learned how to survive in their presence for many weeks. Master Chief often fights the flood Alongside the Arbiter, who shows blatant disregard when he enters the Flood infected High Charity to Assist Chief and Cortana's escape. In addition, due to a genetic disease or possibly SPARTAN-I bioengineering, Sergeant Johnson is immune to flood infection.
