Banshees from the assault carrier strafed past the ''Spirit'' and unloaded plasma onto the hull and external weaponry of the aged ship. The small craft managed to create a hull breach in [[Sector 17 (Spirit of Fire)|Sector 17]], and to disrupt the firing capability of some of the vessel's [[Unidentified UNSC deck gun|deck guns]]. In response, Cutter made the decision to retract those that were no longer of use in order to prevent further damage. Unfortunately, the plan would require at least twelve hours to see through to completion, time which Cutter exasperatedly declared they didn't have. Their current focus right then had to be beating the ''[[Enduring Conviction]]''. To this end, [[Isabel]] floated an idea wherein a Forerunner [[particle cannon]] on the Ark's surface could be used to immobilize the carrier and drain its shields. If all went according to plan, they could use this opportunity to get Isabel aboard the ship so she could take over its weapon systems. She believed that if she could make the assault carrier fire on the Ark full-stop, that its automated defenses would respond in kind against it. As time was of the essence, ground forces were quickly split between those lead by Douglas, accompanied by Anders, and those by Jerome, who was also given Isabel to carry. Douglas' team would take control of the particle cannon and Jerome would board the ''Conviction'' through its gravity lift at the first chance he got. Cutter warned Douglas that once his team immobilized the ship with the cannon that [[Atriox]] would likely send everything he could at them. Everything ended up going exactly as planned.
