Several modding communities have emerged since the advent of ''Halo CE''. One of the most prominent communities is [[Halomaps.org]] which has the most updated multiplayer custom maps. Modders use the ''Halo Editing Kit'' to incorporate custom models, images, physics, and data into an easily distributed .MAP file, which is compressed and uploaded. In the game, many clans establish themselves to fight one another on custom maps. They train intensely on some maps. This extends and steepens the learning curve for many players. These clans will sometimes make maps of their own.

These clans will sometimes make maps of their own.
However, toward the end of 2005 more and more immature gamers from Halo PC began to join. This was at first greeted as good news since prior to this event CE always had trouble with a low population. However, it soon became clear that most of the new people arriving were not beneficial for the community and many became botters or proved that they were not capable of being admins on Halo servers. This event has led many of the old players to abandon the game to avoid the new players and to remember the good times, most likely before and during summer 2005.

Leaked toward the end of 2005 the aimbot allows a player to track other players by holding down the shift button. It is also possible to track someone through geometry. Aimbots can be detected by using sightjacker which allows someone to view the game from another player's view. The aimbot can also be used in Halo PC.
The aimbot was leaked by an unknown member of the Zelda Mapping Project. Many feel that the creator of the map must take responsibility for not choosing people he could trust for map testing. The creation of the aimbot has created a mass migration of immature gamers into Halo Custom Edition swamping what was once a peaceful and friendly community. This coincides with the leak of the aimbot, the end of 2005.
