The Covenant wished that the planet would contain more Forerunner artifacts for them to claim, and while they only found a complex of ruins, information garnered from them led them to a Shield World. The Spirit of Fire followed and removed the Covenant presence from the planet. However, 'Moramee's capture of an important civilian researcher forced Captain Cutter to pursue the Covenant to the newly discovered Shield World without reinforcements.

On the Shield World, the crew of the Spirit of Fire eventually discovered that the Covenant needed Professor Anders to activate the Apex and claim the huge fleet of Forerunner starships held there. A group of Marines, together with SPARTAN-II Red Team, rescued the researcher and destroyed the Shield World. The Arbiter was also killed by John Forge during the battle though the Prophet of Regret escaped.
On the Shield World, the Covenant and the UNSC began to fight before they realized about the dangers of the new world they discovered: the Flood. The Covenant managed to evacuate into the shield world itself while the UNSC desperately held off the Flood. Finally, Spirit of Fire managed to get inside the shield world, where they encountered the Covenant again. The Spirit of Fire quickly crashed into a Covenant destroyer in the shield world, leading into a desperate repair operation in an attempt to keep the Spirit of Fire's reactor operational. Finally, when the reactor was repaired, the crew of the Spirit of Fire eventually discovered that the Covenant needed Professor Anders to activate the Apex and claim the huge fleet of Forerunner starships held there. A group of Marines, together with SPARTAN-II Red Team, rescued the researcher and evacuated to the surface, where UNSC forces were securing the inside of the shield world. Sergeant Forge and Spartan Red team managed to destroy Covenant forces on the surface.

Captain Cutter aboard the Spirit of Fire came up with a plan to destroy the Shield World in order to deny the Covenant access to the Forerunner ships. Sergeant Forge and Spartan Red team were to deliver the FTL drive of the Spirit of Fire into the sun inside the shield world. However, the two Pelicans in charge of delivering the FTL drive were destroyed. UNSC ground forces then hooked up the reactor to an Elephant and charged multiple Covenant bases. After a long battle, UNSC forces successfully delivered the reactor to the shield world's sun. Inside, Forge and Spartan Red team were engaged by the Arbiter and some Honor Guard Elites while in the shield world. The Arbiter was killed by John Forge during the battle, while Spartan Red team engaged the Elites, killing them all. Forge realized that the reactor's core had overheated and that someone needed to activate it manually. Sergeant Forge opted to stay behind in order to activate the reactor. UNSC forces still on the ground were ordered to escape. However, the portal that lead outside the shield world was locked. UNSC forces needed to reactivate the portal. However, Covenant and Flood forces nearby made it impossible to unlock the portal. UNSC forces quickly engaged the warring sides, managing to destroy all alien contact near the portal. Finally, UNSC Spirit of Fire was able to escape from the shield world.

The destruction of he shield world left thousands of Covenant dead.
